Description
Forged from the fires of divinity and broken by the weight of human ambition, Excalibur is the ultimate artifact of power in ABC's Once Upon a Time. Though it draws inspiration from the classic Arthurian legends and the 1963 Disney masterpiece The Sword in the Stone, the show introduces a tragic, dualistic origin for the blade that ties it directly to the source of all dark magic.
The Forging of Fate
The story of Excalibur begins centuries ago with the prophet Merlin. After drinking from the Holy Grail, Merlin attained immortality and unparalleled magical foresight. However, weary of his eternal life, he sought a way to return to mortality. He used the white-hot flame of Prometheus to reforge the Holy Grail into Excalibur—a vessel that possessed the power to "cut away" immortality and restore a human soul to its natural state.
The Great Fracturing
The blade’s destiny took a dark turn due to Nimue, the first Dark One. Driven by a thirst for vengeance and a refusal to give up her eternal power, she shattered the sword. The blade was split into two distinct pieces:
-
The Bottom Fragment: The larger portion remained the legendary sword Excalibur, though it was incomplete and lacked its full reality-altering power.
-
The Tip: The broken end of the blade was transformed into the Dark One’s Dagger.
Because they were once a single entity, the Dagger and Excalibur share a symbiotic link; they are two sides of the same coin, representing the balance between Light and Darkness.
The Stone and the Sovereign
Following the breakage, Merlin placed the remaining portion of Excalibur into a stone in Camelot. He enchanted it so that only the "True King" could draw it. While King Arthur eventually pulled the sword from the stone, his victory was hollow. He became obsessed with finding the missing Dagger tip to "mend" the blade and restore Excalibur to its full glory, believing that only a complete sword could make Camelot the shining kingdom it was meant to be.
The Power to Kill Immortals
When fully restored using the Flame of Prometheus, Excalibur is the only weapon capable of permanently destroying a Dark One. However, the cost is absolute: the wielder must use the sword to strike the Dark One, which effectively "cuts away" the darkness but also kills the host. During the fifth season, this power becomes central to the conflict as characters like Emma Swan and Hook struggle with the temptation to use the blade to end the cycle of darkness forever.
The Unholy Counterpart
In stark contrast to the light of the Grail, there exists an Unholy Grail. While the Holy Grail was used to create the magic of the world, the Unholy Grail possesses the inverse ability to strip magic away entirely, serving as a dark mirror to the very essence of Excalibur’s origin.
