This replica was widely used in the American Civil War and it continued in service with the US Army after the war and in particular the US Cavalry on the Indian plains. During the Civil War and afterwards with the US Army there was not a standardisation of weapons and various pistols would be used within the same unit. It is one of the legendary pistols of the early American expeditions into the west but mainly made famous in the American civil war and still in use during the the wild west period.
This replica has been seen in many films by Clint Eastwood, for example in the film The Outlaw Josey Wales, Josey is armed with a 1860 Colt Army and two Colt Dragoon revolvers.

- Working single action, the hammer can be cocked (two positions) which also moves the chamber round.
