Created around 1050 BBY by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian ever inducted into the Jedi Order, the Darksaber is the only weapon of its kind in the entire Star Wars galaxy. After Vizsla's passing, it was stolen from the Jedi Temple by members of House Vizsla, who used it to unite and rule all of Mandalore. By the time of the Clone Wars, it had passed to Pre Vizsla, the leader of Death Watch, before falling into the hands of Darth Maul, one of the most feared dark side warriors in the galaxy, after he defeated Vizsla in single combat. Later recovered by Mandalorian warrior Sabine Wren during the Imperial Era, it was passed to Bo-Katan Kryze, who became Mand'alor. After the Great Purge of Mandalore, Moff Gideon took possession of the blade, and it would not return to rightful Mandalorian hands until Din Djarin defeated Gideon in combat during The Mandalorian Season 2, with Bo-Katan ultimately claiming it as her own in Season 3. According to Mandalorian custom, the Darksaber can only be won in combat and whoever wields it can rule all of Mandalore.
