Ichigo's hollow mask is a means for him to harness his inner hollow's power. When he puts on his mask, he attains a hollowized state, and becomes a Vizard. In this state, his power levels increase manifold. His physical strength, speed, attack power, reiatsu etc. are elevated to very high levels.

Hollow Ichigo is capable of taking over Ichigo's body and powers when Ichigo falls unconscious in a fight. In this occurrence, Ichigo's sclera blacken and his irises glow golden-yellow in combination with a Hollow mask forming on the left side of his face.
